Scotland’s answer to Route 66, the new scenic route created in 2014 by the North Highland Initiative. It was through the Tourism Project Board, that the idea of the North Coast 500 was born. The concept of the North Coast 500 was developed in order to create a tourism product that the whole of the North Highlands could benefit from and with such natural beauty already on offer, it was from there that the idea was formed.

Bringing together a route of just over 500 miles of stunning coastal scenery, the route path naturally follows the main roads across the coastal edges of the North Highlands taking in the villages and towns of places like Ullapool, Durness, John O’Groats, Dornoch and Inverness.

The Official North Coast 500 route begins and ends in Inverness at Inverness Castle. The Castle is a perfect starting point to the route as perched on the hill, it overs unparelled views over the capital city of the Highlands.

In May 2015, 38 Porsche enthusiasts embarked on the trip of a lifetime; driving the 2,500km length of the west coast of Ireland. The Wild Atlantic Run kicked off in Malin Head, Donegal, and the drivers made their way south, taking in all the stunning scenery this rugged landscape has to offer.

Door kleine dorpjes, dan weet je waarom de grote wagen hier een Fiat 500 is, beter nog een Piaggio 3 wieler…

You will also notice that after passing through a tunnel, the surrounding vegetation almost magically transitions from desert to forest. The winding road will eventually lead you into the small mountain town of Cloudcroft, NM.

For the drivers, take that first right when you get into town, onto Cox Canyon Highway 130. and follow it all the way till it loops back onto Highway 82, then hang a left to get back to Cloudcroft. For the less-inclined to drive, stop into Cloudcroft’s old town and kill some time while the hard-core drivers make their lap of the mountain back-roads. Be sure to meet up with them in the sizable lot at the Highway 82 and Highway 244 Junction, just east of Cloudcroft, around the sweeping bend.

Highway 244 is really what I have been working to get you to. This is a little-known highway (that has become more popular with select driving groups) that is a ton of fun to drive. It is full of winding roads, blind corners, elevations changes and amazing scenery. Unfortunately it is also an open range, meaning that there is a multitude of cattle that can be standing in the middle of the road at any time — or at least the remnant droppings of one.

+1 voor de Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, al was het 10 jaar geleden rond half juni al af en toe al een beetje aanschuiven…

toen nog met de motorfiets, dus niet moeilijk om overal voorbij te geraken… :first:

Heb me hier vorig jaar eens behoorlijk in verdiept, vooral in die Transfagarasan Highway in Roemenië.
Uiteindelijk geen trip gepland ivm het slechte wegdek.
Als je alleen rijdt valt het nog wel mee maar met een groepje heb je snel last van steenslag.

Daarnaast rijdt en stuurt glad asfalt gewoon veel fijner, dus ik hou het bij roadtrips door de Alpen, Pyreneeën en de Oostenrijkse passen.
