1947: The Type 360 by Porsche for Cisitalia is a single-seater with four-wheel drive. One car is built but never raced.
Design work commences on the 356, which blends elements of the Type 60, Type 114, and Type 360.
1948: By the time production of the 356 begins, its souped-up VW engine is moved behind the rear axle to provide
adequate luggage space and to permit use of the Beetle’s rear suspension
1953: Porsche’s first factory racer, the mid-engined 550, wins its debut race and dominates the 1500-cc class at
Le Mans. A long succession of mid-engined four-, six-, eight-, and twelve-cylinder Porsche racers follows
1963: The 356’s successor debuts with a longer wheelbase, chassis upgrades, nicer styling, two-plus-two seating,
and a new flat-six. The 911’s main carry-over is the rear-engine layout.
1969: After witnessing a decade of mid-engine success throughout the top levels of motorsports, Porsche and VW team
up to develop the hapless 914 sports car, which enjoys a life span of only six years.
1971: Porsche executes an about-face with two designs employing water-cooled front engines and rear-mounted transaxles.
The 924 bows in 1975, followed by the 928 in 1977; neither finds success, and the 911 lives on.
1982: The 944 upstages the 924 and earns a more enthusiastic following with its more potent, Porsche-designed engine.
1996: The Boxster is the first new mid-engined Porsche in 27 years. (A Cayman coupe arrives in 2006, based on the second-
generation 987 Boxster.)
2004: Instead of squandering effort invested in a stillborn Le Mans prototype, Porsche offers a few fortunate customers its
Carrera GT sports car powered by a mid-mounted 605-hp V-10.
