Porsche: Geen model onder de Boxster

      door redactie Autovisie
      AMSTERDAM –

On its second year of return to Le Mans, Stuttgart’s pony brand managed to score a historic triumph. The 919 Hybrid is on everybody’s lips and by the time the next 911 generation arrives, it too will have electric motors powering it.

It’s rumored that both Porsche and Audi are going to launch a fully electric sedan with a range of about 400 kilometers (around 250 miles). So we can be sure that sooner or later Le Mans victories will be contested between rechargeable machines.

          prototype Le Mans 2035

          A design proposal

And that conveniently brings us to the subject at hand. We’ve recently discovered the work of a young Korean design student called Gilsung Park, studying at Hochschule Pforzheim in Germany. Or at least we think he is a student since he described his “Porsche Electric Le Mans 2035 Concept” as being a master thesis study for the winter semester. We’ve been told the man is now working at the Porsche Advanced Studio and we think he deserves his job.

It’s not just a picture of a car that will never exist. He thought of features like an exchangeable battery, since you need a way to return rapidly to the track once the juice runs out. Can you imagine how the strategies will change after internal combustion is replaced by the flow of electrons?

“Do we change the battery to give him a boost or let it deplete until the race ends?” the pit bosses will say.

Even the propulsion is changed. As the 2035 concept doesn’t use conventional electric motors. Instead, an air turbine levitation hub-motor creates both spinning force for the wheels and backwards thrust like a jet.

en 3 jaar later, in 1991, werd deze porsche 932 concept II gebouwd:

Even a bon vivant and motor racing legend on the scale of Sir Stirling Moss needs a little retail therapy from time to time. A few years back, when the already 80-something stepped into an empty elevator shaft and fell three stories, he dreamed of only one therapy – a 1961 Porsche RS61, chassis 718-070 – to get him back on his feet. He’d driven one at the Nurburgring through rain, sleet, and snow paired with fellow Briton Graham hill and remembers the experience with great fondness. Never one let something like a fall down and elevator shaft to get in the way, Sir Moss used a proxy to bid on the Porsche as it crossed Gooding’s stage during the auction at the Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance. After some very heated bidding, Stirling purchased the car with a high bid of $1.705MM.

Now, it seems, he’s moved on to other favorable pursuits and will be selling the Porsche, one of his favorite toys. He says it’s one of the best driving Porsches ever, even better than contemporary 911s, with all their creature comforts and driver aids. Light, nimble, and quick, the car comes with a considerable provenance. Its original owner was American Bob Holbert (father of Al Holbert). It was then owned by club-enthusiasts Tom Payne and Millard Ripley, in succession. The car has 13 race wins and 20 podiums to its illustrious credit.
All said, if you are interested you may have to make a few choices. London-based auction house Bonhams will be auctioning the car this summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Beginning bids are expected to be somewhere in the neighborhood of US$ 2.5 million.

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller has confirmed a launch date for the four-cylinder-equipped Boxster and Cayman.

Speaking with Automotive News (subscription required), Mueller said the Boxster and Cayman would adopt four-cylinder power in mid-2016, which is when facelifted versions of both cars are due. Prototypes for the cars, which arrive as 2017 models, have already been spotted.

Mueller has previously hinted that Porsche’s flat-four engine, which should come in 2.0- and 2.5-liter flavors, and with turbocharging, could develop up to 400 metric horsepower in some guises, which is approximately 395 regular horses. The most powerful versions of the current Boxster and Cayman are the recently revealed Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4, which produce 375 and 385 hp respectively from their flat-six engines.

This will be the first time in 20 years that Porsche offers a four-cylinder model in the U.S., with the last one being the 968. However, a modern four-cylinder Porsche is already on sale in some markets: the Macan. This base Macan features a conventional inline engine design.

Interestingly, Mueller in his latest interview also hinted that more four-cylinder Porsches could be on the way.

“First of all, we will have it in the Boxster and Cayman successor,” Mueller explained. “And then we will see how it works and how successful it is and how the customers will react on that, and then we will take the next decisions.”

This suggests that the four-cylinder Macan may eventually make it to these shores. And given Mueller’s performance claims for the new flat-four engine, we may even see it end up in the 911 at some point. A Porsche engineer has previously stated that the automaker was not averse to using four-cylinder engines in its iconic sports car, and more recently the 919 Hybrid Le Mans prototype, which features a V-4 engine, was billed as the essence of Porsche.

                    1981 Kremer Porsche 935

                      stretched 911

We were given to understand that it was a Pininfarina prototype, but didn’t know much more about it until many years later upon finding an entry in the Boschen/Barth book “Porsche Specials”, which explains that it appeared in 1969, having been commissioned by Porsche. Lengthened by 7 ½ inches, it gave more legroom to the rear seat passengers, with more headroom provided by an unhappy alteration of the roofline. The rear seats themselves appeared to be pretty much the minimally padded stock versions.

Not only was it cosmetically challenged, it was quite too heavy at 2500 pounds, now had a turning circle of 38 feet, and a weight distribution of 39/61. Designated “B 17” by Porsche, it was mercifully never put into production, although it was updated 6 years later with a 2.7 Carrera engine and body changes including the front spoiler; the original Boge Hydromat front suspension was replaced with Konis. I don’t know whether Porsche still owns this car; my inquiry to them is as yet unanswered. Have any of you seen it? I don’t think you’d easily forget the experience!

Porsche has announced they are seriously considering expanding the Boxster/Cayman lineup by adding a Boxster Spyder GT4 and a Cayman GT4 RS.

British magazine Autocar is citing a source close to Porsche who says the company is analyzing the prospects of coming out with a GT4 version of the recently introduced Boxster Spyder. If green-lighted for production, the range-topping Boxster version is going to be virtually the same as the Cayman GT4, with the exception of the roof. As a consequence, expect a six-cylinder 3.8-liter engine with 385 PS (283 kW) channeled to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

There also might be an even more hardcore version of the Cayman GT4 which is believed to receive the “RS” moniker. Porsche has previously said such a model isn’t in the works yet but they did say it could be out sometime in the future. Fueled by the success of the Cayman GT4, the Stuttgart-based automaker is now analyzing the prospects of coming out with a Cayman GT4 RS which will likely be even more powerful and lighter.

Porsche 356 Abarth GTL is another example of a very rare Porsche, being part of the initial, limited production run of 21 GTL’s from back in 1960. This particular car (serial #1015), was the fifteenth of only 21 produced during that time frame.
