Porsche Recalling Small Number of 2017 Caymans, Boxsters and 991
It has been reported to Porsche that there may be a defect in certain vendor supplied airbag products. Porsche understand that under certain manufacturing conditions, on two separate production lines operated by an Autoliv Group company, there were deviations in the generant mix ratio of some initiators. Some of these products were supplied to Porsche. If the generant mix ratio does not meet specification, the initiators may not function properly, possibly leading to a “non-deployment” condition in the event if a vehicle crash.
Porsche’s supplier, Autolive, will provide replacement components to Porsche. Once that happens, the small number of cars affected will be recalled to the dealer to have replacement components installed.
The recall notice itself was issued on December 22, 2016. At the time, Porsche said it would notify affected customers within 10 days. So, by now if you were one of the small number to have had this issue you should have heard from your dealer/Porsche by now.

PORSCHE ISSUES RECALL AND STOP-SALE ON 718 CAYMAN AND BOXSTER MODELS
Porsche Cars North America is issuing a voluntary safety recall for 2017 through 2019 model year 718 Boxsters and Caymans. Porsche has indicated that in a frontal crash test a longitudinal crash beam may not perform as intended. As a result, the lower crash beam may penetrate the bulkhead wall or fuel tank. This causes the component to be non-compliant with certain requirements of UN Regulation R-94.
The recall is being implemented as a result of internal quality control efforts by Porsche. Per the manufacturer this defect has not resulted in accidents or injuries to date.
Affected vehicles will be recalled to authorized Porsche dealers, and the lower longitudinal member will be secured with additional rivets. Owners will be notified about the recall by mail, and per the manufacturer the work will take about an hour and a half and will be handled free of charge. 14,388 vehicles in the United States and Puerto Rico are affected.
At this time the recall appears to be fully internal, and is not listed on the NTHSA pages for the model.
