    • 904 GTS: fifty years of pure porsche

The Gran Turismo Sport badge – as worn by the new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS – signifies the purest Porsche driving experience. In that respect, nothing has changed in the half-century since we first used it on the Porsche 904 GTS.

Designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, grandson of company founder Ferdinand Porsche, the ladder-framed, glassfibre-bodied 904 GTS was launched in late 1963. Developed for sports car racing, the car was powered by a mid-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, producing a remarkable 198hp from a capacity of just 1,966cc.

Agile and durable, the 904 GTS was to become phenomenally successful in the 1964 and 1965 seasons. It took numerous class wins including at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and even had significant success in rallying.

Perhaps its most famous victory, however, came fifty years ago last month, with a one-two at the 1964 running of the legendary Targa Florio road race in Sicily. For the event, the Porsche factory entered two examples of the 904 GTS, and one 904/8 – an eight-cylindered prototype variant. The 904 GTS proved supreme around the twisting mountain roads of the 45-mile circuit, with the number 86 car of Antonio Pucci and Colin Davis romping home to victory, followed 12 minutes later by Herbert Linge and Gianni Balzarini in car number 84. Rounding off the success, the 904/8 crossed the line six minutes behind, sealing a class win for Edgar Barth and Umberto Maglioli.

                          1989 Porsche Panamericana Concept
On his birthday, Dr. Ferry Porsche (Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche), son of company founder Ferdinand Porsche receive a 1989 Porsche Panamericana Concept as a gift. This concept was also premiered at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show and get a big attention from its visitor. Based on the 911 Carrera 4, Porsche choose Panamericana name as a reference to the Carrera Panamericana, an endurance race during 1950s in Mexico. Responsible people who lead the development of this roadster concept is Ulrich Bez (now CEO at Aston Martin) who went for a special turquoise blue paint for what looks like a dune buggy 911. For the power source, Panamericana roadster concept is come with a SOHC horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine, delivering 247 horsepower (184 kW) at 6,100 rpm and 228 Nm (168 lb-ft) at 4,800 rpm. The engine is connected to a five-speed manual gearbox and four wheel drive system. With all of that features, the 1989 Porsche Panamericana Concept is able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 5.0 seconds before reach maximum speed. Panamericana roadster measures 164.4 inches overall length, 74.6 inches width, 52.2 inches height with roof and 89.5 inches wheelbase. Front track width is 54.3 inches and 54.1 inches at the rear, while the total weight is 3,197 pounds. The vehicle body design was an amalgamation of striking curves, cut by the occasional sharp edge. It was specially designed with steel frame, glass/carbon fiber body and two-door coupe styling. The most interesting part from this vehicle is low and completely transparent top. Quoted from wikipedia.org “The three part Speedline rims were made exclusively for this model. The roof line was homogeneously streamlined and sloped gently towards the rear engine deck. It could be covered with a waterproof fabric with a pink zipper. Various roof configurations were possible and the car was in fact an hybrid of a Targa, convertible, coupe and off-roader.”

A prototype custom sports cabriolet, described as a ‘historically important Porsche’
The 1948 car is considered by many as a forefather to the later factory 356 cars with such details as a curved windshield and swooping bodywork. It is believed to be one of two built in Zurich by the renowned Swiss Coachbuilder and one of the creators of the early 356, Hans Waibel.

Waibel is said to have had close ties to Dr Ferdinand Porsche before and after World War II, including building two prototypes and a commission to produce two show cars in 1948. The 356 was originally first shown at the 1949 Geneva Motor Show and holds a special place among Porsche aficionados.

Historians say it is the car that help defined the brand’s sportscars and their shape. However, the prototype was never claimed to be a genuine Porsche, having been built on a VW chassis with a light-weight aluminium body.

But the styling cues that marked the early 356s are clear, except for headlights that were sunk into the bodywork and the prototype’s mesh grille, which had an opening to direct cooling air via an electric fan to the rear-mounted engine.

Coopers says the prototype carries a unique provenance with ownership history including some of the major players in early Porsche history. These included the then president of VW AG Switzerland, a M Debrunner and Ruprecht von Senger.

Von Senger financed and established the early Porsche dealership network in Europe. The car was last registered in Switzerland in 1959. It was put into storage for 20 years and eventually sold to a Californian restoration specialist Michael Rizzuto.

Rizzuto sold the car in unrestored condition to Hollywood film director and producer Monty Montgomery in 1988. Montgomery commissioned a full restoration and upon completion in 1992 it was exhibited at the famous Pebble Beach concours in California.

The rare prototype is finished in a metallic green with white and green interior. Coopers has not listed an estimated price for the car but when it was last sold in London in 1996 it fetched just $37,000. This time around the car is expected to fetch a much higher price.
